Consumer Narrative
I was moving and was looking for apartments or homes for rentals online. I have never been scammed and am pretty aware of what can go wrong so I made sure I was smart about it when gathering details before I sent any payment. I found an ad on XXXX and inquired about it. Someone named XXXX XXXX XXXX texted me from the number XXXX stating it is his property and he is renting it out. The address to this property was XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX. He said he was currently living in Idaho with his family and I told him was skeptical about sending any payment. He then proceeded to send me his license from Idaho with his name and address on it that matched. XXXX XXXX XXXX, XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX. He also typed me up a lease agreement with his signature from his gmail email address, XXXX. He also attached a certificate of ownership for the address he was advertising for. He then asked me if I had XXXX. I told him I would feel comfortable sending the deposit in one payment and then first month rent in the next payment a few days after while I did more research. I sent the first initial payment on XX/XX/22 in the amount of {$1000.00} to his XXXX account which was XXXX. I sent the second payment of {$1000.00} on XX/XX/22. I was supposed to move in on XX/XX/22. I did not hear anything from him after that and I realized I was scammed. I contacted my bank- Bank of America , along with XXXX XXXX and the local XXXX XXXX police department about this immediately. I also filled a complaint on the IC3.gov website. Bank of America said the denied my dispute because I authorized the transaction. In my opinion, that is extremely frustrating because there is no protection from scam through XXXX. When someone in a third party induces you to send money as part of a scam, that person is initiating a transfer without your authorization. I am very upset about this and now I am out {$2000.00} that I really need. I hope no one else makes the same mistake I did. I had a ton of information ( phone number, email address, XXXX email address ) and I know XXXX is traceable. I am shocked Bank of America just blew it over so quickly. Bank of America encourages customers to use XXXX yet BOA wants zero part in it when theres a scam. Its very upsetting and I hope no one has to go through this nightmare of being defrauded.
