Consumer Narrative
For many years I have leased a safe deposit box from Chase. I would receive an annual bill and pay it. The bill would have the reminder that if payment wasn't received, Chase had the right to seize the box and its contents. I didn't receive a bill in XXXX ( I assumed COVID might be the reason ). In XX/XX/XXXX I moved to another state, but didn't notify Chase until XX/XX/XXXX when I requested that the rental be canceled. I explained that the box was empty since I removed everything after my mother 's death and never got around to bringing anything back before I moved to XXXX in XX/XX/XXXX. I was willing to pay the fee for that year and a penalty for the key. I received a letter from Chase in XX/XX/XXXX telling me they had debited my savings account for rental fees for XXXX and XXXX. Since receiving that letter, I have spoken to Chase representatives many times. They insist that policy dictates that I can only end the rental in person. I've explained that the rental agreement stated if a payment was missed, they had a right to hold the box and its contents. Chase has now received two years of rental fees ( XXXX & XXXX ) for an empty box that I no longer use or need, and they will continue to do so each year because they claim that their policy was changed in XXXX. I moved to a city that doesn't have a Chase presence, my sister, also on the box, went to a Chase in her city and was told nothing could be done. In the meantime, I am being threatened that my credit can be harmed, access to some services has been partially restricted and I've been waiting twice as long as usual for a replacement debit card. I was forced to pay {$160.00} for an empty box. I can expect to pay it again next year if something isn't done. I am XXXX years old and they expect me to travel back to XXXX or get a legal Power of Attorney to end the rental on a safe deposit box when the agreement was pay the fee or lose the box.
