Consumer Narrative

The week of XX/XX/2022, I received a packet in the mail from CITIBANK that included 40 checks embossed with my name and address for a " Citigold '' checking account for a " XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX '' account and a " citi '' XXXX with a " Card Agreement Guide '' also using my name, XXXX XXXX. The problem is that I never opened any such account. I have never had a a checking account with Citibank. I had no contact with Citibank. All my checking and savings accounts have been with credit unions for over 35 years. I called their " customer service '' ( sic ) phone number on XX/XX/2022 to find out what was going on and to make sure the account was closed. Their agents spoke very poor XXXX and the phone connection was faulty. After several long holds, I was connected to the " Fraud Department, '' where the language problem got worse. I was told that the account would be closed. I called them back on XX/XX/2022 where " XXXX '' ( the " supervisor '' I demanded to speak with ) told me the account had not been closed and that over {$600.00} in charges had been made against it. She then closed the account and told me the " Transaction Number '' was XXXX. She said it was my responsibility to pay any charges on the account and that if I wanted to know the results of their internal fraud investigation, it was up to me to call them back at a future date. She said the account was opened on XX/XX/2022, but could give no details as to how it was opened or whether there is any paper trail indicating if there was a signed application for it. In short, they have no evidence that I ever applied for the account. On XX/XX/2022, I received a form letter from Citibank confirming that " your Citi XXXX XXXX XXXX ac count '' had been closed. The letter stated : " Please be aware that you are responsible for your balance and will continue to receive monthly billing statements until it is paid in full. '' The bottom line is that this fraudulent account was either opened intentionally by Citibank or a hacker had enough of my personal information to illegally open an account in my name. I requested a letter from them acknowledging that the account was opened fraudulently and that I am not responsible for any charges related to it, but " XXXX '' would not confirm that they would do that.
