Consumer Narrative

To Whom it May Concern : I am writing you regarding a {$1300.00} collection fee attached to a tuition bill for XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX for my son _______. My son attended the Vocational Independence Program ( VIP ), a special education transition program for young people with XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX. He attended XX/XX/XXXX through XX/XX/XXXX, when the program was discontinued by XXXX during the pandemic shut down. The tuition for the program was being covered by a program of the XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX ( XXXX ). At the end of each month the fiscal intermediary handling my son 's case, XXXX XXXX for XXXX XXXX ( XXXX ), would receive an invoice and pay the monthly bill. The collection agency wants to enforce an unjustifiable exorbitant collection fee and slap my XXXX son with a bad credit rating. I have a timeline of email contacts, and supporting documents, from the first contact I received from the bursar in XX/XX/XXXX, through this summer. I have been in constant contact with the collection agency and RCIL attempting to resolve if there was still money in the budget to cover the remaining balance, so that I would know if I needed to pay out of pocket and could settle this matter in a timely fashion. In a typical collegiate situation, the bill is in the students name with the assumption that student is developmentally capable of understanding responsibility and perhaps even the finances as they are attending a degree program. However, it should be noted that this aforementioned program was not a typical college program. It was a program for young people with XXXX, to teach them the necessary skills to be able to live as independently as possible and be productive members of the community. After finally getting word from the fiscal intermediary that they did not have any more funds in his budget to cover the final balance, I did pay off the XXXX tuition remaining in two increments of {$2500.00} in XXXX. My intention was to get this request email to them then, but my son then became sick with XXXX, with my daughter becoming ill just on the heels of his recovery. Students who attend these programs dont have bank accounts or credit cards and are just learning how to handle basic financial transactions. Therefore, I think it is justifiably unfair for my son to be penalized with the bad credit rating. I am contesting the collection fee, as they are well aware of the situation and request it be dropped and my sons name remain clear.
