Consumer Narrative
While purchasing a used car and and to help with some XXXX XXXXXXXX expenses, my mother-in-law helped us with a loan. She gave us a bank cashiers check for {$3000.00}. Since there is not a local branch of Citi Bank in XXXX, I used my phone to make a mobile deposit to my checking account on XX/XX/XXXX. I received an email acknowledgement that the check have been received, and the funds would be available within a few business days. However, the funds never became available. Citi did not seem to understand what a cashiers check was, as they contacted my mother-in-law to ask her what the check number was. My mother-in-law informed Citi that it was a cashiers check ( guaranteed by the bank ), and instructed Citi bank to contact XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX as they could provide the details for the check. After approximately XXXX days, Citi froze my checking account. I called Citi bank, and was told my account was froze due to " potentially fraudelent activity '' on the account. When I asked for details, I was told that they would need to talk to a manager as they didn't have details. However, despite calling multiple times, a manager was never free/available to discuss. Since my account was frozen, and I still had not received a confirmation that Citi bank deposited the cashiers check, my mother-in-law ended up giving me cash. We also obtained a letter from my mother-in-laws bank ( XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX to indicate the cashiers check should NOT be cashed. On XX/XX/XXXX, I drove to the nearest Citi Bank branch ( in Illinois ) and gave the the letter from the XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX indicating the cashiers check should no longer be cashed and asked to close my account. They took the letter, and stated I would receive a letter confirming that they acknowledged that the check would not be cashed. However, I did not receive a follow up letter as promised. Then, on XX/XX/XXXX, Citi Bank cashed the cashiers check. Despit the check being cashed and withdrawn from my mother-in-laws account, the funds have NOT been deposited into my account and my account remains frozen without any further explation. Based on the timing, I believe Citi bank froze my account as a result of me attempting to perform a mobile deposit of a cashiers check for {$3000.00}. ( Based on the call to my mother-in-law, the Citi Bank employee did not seem to understand the concept of a cashiers check. ) I would like to formally file a formal complaint requesting Citi Bank unfreeze my account, and deposit the funds from the cashiers check so that I can pay back my mother-in-law.
