Scammer claiming to be a billing agent for XXXX XXXX called and said my electricity would be shut off if I did not immediately pay a bill of {$490.00}. I agreed to pay and they said I needed to use XXXX and put my case number in the note on the XXXX payment. I was assured that I could pay the bill in person at a XXXX XXXX, but I had the option to pay through an app. I checked my bank statements and saw that my XXXX XXXX bill is autopayed from my Citibank checking account and was paid recently. Called Citibank to have them cancel the payment and they said there was no recourse because I had approved the payment. I did indeed approve, but only because I THOUGHT I was paying a utility bill, not a scammer. Scammer required I put " XXXX '' in the memo for XXXX XXXX billing. Citbank said they would investigate, but shouldn't XXXX be accountable for these fraud schemes? 1. They are making money from illegal transactions. 2. For larger payments, there should be some delay or buffer to prevent this. 3. XXXX should be able to easily connect user activity to an individual and hold them accountable. It's not hard. The banks that own XXXX are abetting criminals.
