Consumer Narrative
On XX/XX/2022, I received a " Chase Fraud '' text message alerting me that the bank had declined a {$2000.00} charge and they asked if I had made the purchase. If I responded " no, '' the text explained, they would close the current card and send me a new one. I called Chase and let them know I had not made the purchase at *A-American, along with additional charged in the amounts of {$10.00}, {$400.00}, {$2400.00} and {$8900.00}. The rep assured me not to worry ; they were " closing '' that card number, issuing us new ones and investigating the matter. Then, on XX/XX/2022 the next communication I received from Chase was a letter informing me that I was being held responsible for the $! 0 and {$2400.00} charges as I had " received benefit from the transaction. '' When I called the next day, I was told that their " investigation '' determined that we had made a purchase, as they had an invoice with " matching information. '' This information was my husband 's name, my email address, my cell phone number and our home address. I asked for the contact information for the business in question and was provided with an address and a phone number. The address turned out to belong to our local electric utility, not a private business, and when I called the phone number it only gave a recording with instructions about how to report an outage. Follow up phone calls to Chase provided different information. I was given a new address and phone number, both belonging to the real XXXX XXXX, which is a company not in our area. When I called them and spoke with their billing department, I was told they had no record of my husband, me or any of our contact information. They also did not have any record of any transactions for the amounts Chase was quoting. I filed a police report with the XXXX XXXX Police Department and the detective who was assigned the case had already called the company before I had ; he got the same response as me. I have filed an appeal with Chase and requested copies of the " invoice '' upon which they are basing their investigation ; they will not, however, tell me how they acquired this invoice as both of the phone numbers and addresses are not valid. Today, I received a follow up letter from Chase informing me that their " latest review conforms the previous finding that the transaction is valid. '' " The transaction will remain as part of your account balance. You're responsible for paying the amounts on your account. '' We did not receive ANYTHING from the fraudster who is using various addresses and phone numbers as fronts for theft. Someone is stealing {$2500.00} from me and Chase is complicit in this.
