I surrendered a rental property back to the mortgagee in 2012. The property was charged off rather than foreclosures and sent to a collection company. They attempted to collect on the debt and it was later purchased by another company who also attempted to collect. It was later charged off after several years. The property itself was demolished by the city because of it being in poor condition. However, the city is still assessing me property taxes since it is in my name. I tried donating the lot to the city in order to erase the back taxes but there is still a mortgage on the property. The mortgage company wants to pay {$1000.00} in order to release the lien on it so it can be donated.
