Consumer Narrative
On or around XX/XX/XXXX, I opened a personal checking account at a Chase Bank branch located at XXXX XXXX XXXX, XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX. Almost immediately after I opened the account, the account was somehow compromised and someone began making XXXX and later on, card transactions. Up until XX/XX/XXXX, I did not know my account was being used by someone else in a foreign country ( XXXX of all places ), as I used this account as a " surprise '' savings account. By surprise, I mean that I deposited as much money as I could without checking the balance. Chase also for some reason, NEVER sent me any monthly statements. I never used the debit card or purchased anything. I made only two cash withdrawals from my local branch totaling {$3400.00}, both on the same day, to pay for a large business expense, which my husband promptly refunded, and I then redeposited. I set up the online access when I initially opened the account, but never logged in, not even once over the last year or so ( which I understand is unusual to some, but the equivalent of throwing cash under the matress ). All of my deposits were made in person up until around XX/XX/XXXX when one of my new cleaning jobs decided he could only pay with " XXXX '' which I connected. Being that I keep secure digital copies of my debit cards with me, I set up the XXXX to receive deposits and continued depositing at my local branch. Finally On XX/XX/XXXX, I decided to check my savings. Initially I tried to log in using the username and password that I originally set up at the branch. Which did not work. I got my husband to come help. We recovered the username using the account number and my social security number, only to find out it had been changed to something different. When we tried to recover the password, the phone number was also different. I called Chase customer service and they asked me if I still had the same " international phone number '' to which I was baffled. Luckily the nice lady on the phone was able to change my phone number back to my cell phone number and we were able to reset the password and log in. Upon logging in, I was disheartened to find that my balance was {$4.00} and not the $ 15k or so that we were expecting. We were saddened to see page after page of XXXX and card transactions from someone using our account as theirs. Receiving XXXX deposits from god knows who, in addition to mine, and just living a luxury life of spending my money at restaurants, hotels, and other businesses. Also, this person had set up the Chase mobile app on their phone and remotely deposited fake checks of almost {$2200.00}, which of course bounced and charged the account. The pictures of the checks are on my deposit history and you can clearly see that they are not signed by me and are written in XXXX.
