I received a debt collection notice from BC Services, based in XXXX, CO for a bill that I did not know about or believe that I owed. The letter did not include any notice that I had a right to dispute the debt, or any instructions on how to do so. Luckily, I happened to already know that debt collectors can not charge a bill without providing proof of the debt, and I took action immediately by contacting the company by email and paper mail to request written proof of the debt. I also spoke to a BC Services representative on the phone who told me the company could not provide any information and it was my own responsibility to contact the creditor, the Colorado Department XXXX XXXX directly and figure out what the bill was for- which is not the case. The first " verification '' of debt I received was a simple account statement from the CO XXXX. of XXXX that contained no information about what the bill was for or evidence that I owed the money, which was the specific information I had asked for. Only after writing and emailing four times between XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/2022, the last email including a threat of legal action, did I receive a helpful response from BC Services. At that point, my request for proof was finally forwarded by the company to the creditor and I received written documentation of how the debt originated. BC Services did not inform me of my rights from the start, and did not take responsibility for providing real evidence of the debt until threatened with legal action- hardly fair practices.
