On XX/XX/XXXX, I received notice of declined card activity on my Chase XXXX card. I looked online at my card 's activity and saw fraudulent purchases for {$110.00} at a XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, MD, and {$4400.00} at the XXXX XXXX in the same mall in XXXX. I called the fraud department at Chase XXXX, and the representative said they would take care of it. However, in early XXXX Chase sent me a letter saying that they were holding me responsible for the entirety of the charges because I had " received benefit. '' When I followed up with the Fraud Recovery department, I learned that they had not contacted the XXXX XXXX XXXX MD XXXX Police Department, XXXX XXXX, or the XXXX XXXX to find out who was responsible for the fraudulent purposes. When I asked XXXXXX/XX/XXXX XXXX from XXXX XXXX why Chase had not taken any steps, he couldn't give me an answer. When I asked him why the initial representative that I spoke to on XX/XX/XXXX didn't advise me to call the police, he said that such a recommendation would sound " accusatory. '' In my opinion, this failure of Chase XXXX 's to make any attempt to alert the police or the involved merchants of fraud, and Chase 's failure to advise me to call the police, is enabling criminals to operate with relative impunity. If I thought for a moment that Chase would take zero action to help the police protect us from criminals, I would have called immediately. They are a huge corporation with access to all kinds of information and businesses world-wide. Why do they think they have no obligation to use their resources to protect customers and businesses?
