Consumer Narrative

On XX/XX/2021, I logged into my Chase Credit Card account and when I was presented with my multi-factor auth screen, there was a phone number ending in digits that are not mine, and of a phone number that is not on my account. I called Chase at XXXX Eastern , and I was told that it was probably added by the Chase technical team who sometimes needs to do this for testing, and that it would be removed but to give it a few hours. This is deeply concerning to me, especially with how pervasive SIM swapping has become. I am reaching out to them again as it has not yet been resolved. In an industry with multiple regulatory standards such as banking, I am trying to understand how someone on the backend team as described by customer support could possibly have entitlements in their systems that allow multi-factor auth to be updated with phone numbers not added or requested by the customer. There is no way to know how pervasive it is, but it certainly raises questions about internal best practices and is deeply concerning to me as a consumer.
