Consumer Narrative

On XX/XX/XXXX, I made a deposit to an inmate commissary account via my Southwest Visa issued by Chase. I placed {$19.00} on the account and accepted a {$3.00} fee to XXXX XXXX for the use of a credit card for a total of {$23.00}. The fee was based on a scale, which would have been more if I had placed $ 20+. Understanding the fees that merchants pay to credit card companies, I accepted the {$3.00} Fee. When I received my Southwest Visa Statement with Payment Due Date of XX/XX/XXXX, I found that the {$23.00} had been charged as a Cash Advance and a flat fee of {$10.00} had been added. When I called Chase Customer Service on XX/XX/XXXX, I was told the fees for Cash Advances were in my card agreement and additionally that interest would accrue until paid. I requested immediate processing of my auto payment to avoid additional charges. I do not feel that it is appropriate for Chase to take advantage of deposits to inmates. In my opinion, this was not a cash advance because I do not have control over the charged funds. If it was possible to send XXXX packages, I would. Furthermore, when I requested that Chase block my account from the processing of future Cash Advances, I was told that they could not. This is a predatory practice.
