Consumer Narrative
( I selected the most appropriate issue in the previous section, but there was really no accurate option on the list for the following issue : ) My husband and I leased a new car in XX/XX/XXXX. When we came to the end of the 3-year lease in Fall XXXX, we decided to purchase the vehicle through a loan. The paperwork was sent to us to fill out from home and have notarized, which we did. When I went to make the car registration payments a couple months later, I was unable to do so - there was an issue with the title. I called Chase Bank and was told that they had the title delivered to our home ( which we had never received ) and that we were supposed to bring it to the DMV. After explaining that we had never received a title, I asked them to generate a duplicate title and was told it would be sent out in 6-8 weeks. The duplicate title never arrived. For the last TWO YEARS, we have found ourselves in a cycle of attempting to request a duplicate title every few months - and each time, the title department treats it as if it were a new request, never acknowledging that we've repeatedly made the request before. When trying to solve this issue directly with the DMV, they informed us that Chase had sent a {$1200.00} check attached to our name, that is simply sitting there - unprocessed - because no one has any idea what it is for. I have been pulled over 3 times and have had to explain the situation to police in hopes that they would not impound my car ( as I can not afford to pay to get it out of impound ; so far, I have been lucky ). I can not guarantee that my insurance company will cover any damage or injury should I end up in an accident, as I can not register my car as required by insurance. I have attempted to get a new title generated for the car by getting an auto loan through a new bank ... but have been told that I will only be approved for a new auto loan when the registration is up to date on the vehicle. I can not receive legal support, because there are no lawyers who see the value in taking this as an individual case. Essentially, I am being held hostage in a vehicle that I must pay for, but can't legally drive and that brings me more liability than it's worth. I know for a fact that there are multiple consumers with this SAME EXACT PROBLEM with Chase 's Title Department. The majority of correspondence around this issue has been over the phone.
