Consumer Narrative

Company : JPMorgan Chase Bank , N.A . ( Chase ) What happened : On XX/XX/year>, counterfeit/duplicate checks posted against our Chase checking account. We wrote one legitimate check for {$200.00}, but two separate counterfeit checks posted for {$600.00} each ( total {$1200.00} ). These items were not authorized by us. The day before the {$600.00} checks posted ( XX/XX/year> ), there was a separate counterfeit check attempt for {$2000.00}. We contacted Chases fraud/claims department immediately. The agent told us it was only an algorithm/system error and reversed it as a glitch rather than treating it as check fraud. Because it was misclassified and not investigated or contained ( e.g., no check block/ no urgent account protection ), the criminals were able to try again and two counterfeit {$600.00} checks posted the next day. Compounding this : our Chase debit card states call for XXXX assistance, but when we attempted to call during the overnight period to prevent posting, the phone lines were closed. We also used the Chase chatbot, which directed us to call multiple numbers presented as XXXX assistance ; those numbers were also closed. This prevented us from giving Chase a timely heads-up before the fraudulent items posted and caused additional harm. Actions taken / Chase response : We spoke with an in-branch banker, three phone agents, and finally a supervisor. The branch helped open a new account and file disputes, but Chase stated it would take XXXX hours for XXXX item and XXXX business days for another to reverse, leaving us without funds around a major holiday. We requested immediate provisional credit because these are unauthorized counterfeit items. The supervisor refused, stating Chase does not provide provisional credit for check fraud. We also requested documentation needed for law enforcement ( copies/images of the checks front/back, claim/case documentation, and deposit/processing details ). Chase refused to provide meaningful assistance for a police report beyond generic statements. Resolution requested : Immediate provisional/temporary credit ( or immediate restoration of available funds ) for the full {$1200.00} while Chase investigates ; Written documentation of the fraud claims and copies/images of the counterfeit checks ( front/back ) plus deposit/processing details sufficient for a police report ; Reversal of any fees or negative impacts caused by these unauthorized items ; Correction of misleading XXXX assistance representations and routing so consumers can actually report fraud after hours.
