Consumer Narrative
I have just started using Robinhood Gold Card for about a month when all of a sudden they required me to send my selfie face photo ( biometric data ) in claim that they needed to verify my identity for my protection. There are no legit credit card company that has ever asked me to do this and I have been using credit cards for decades. I asked Robinhood if I can be verified any other way, such as by sending me a text code or bank deposits that I can verify the amounts. I even asked if I could go in person to their office and show my ID to verify my identity. They refused all and said the only way they will restore my account is after I send in my face photo. I strongly believe this is Robinhood 's ploy to harvest user 's biometric data by forcing users by suspending their accounts. It certainly feels like my rights and privacy is being violated. No where in their terms and conditions does it say the user needs to give their face selfie photos. So this seems like a breach of their own terms and conditions. In addition, XXXX has no phone number to speak to a live person. The way XXXX operates seems so shady. If they never went IPO, I would not trust this company at all. Many of the emails I got seemed like automated emails with canned responses. I received over a dozen emails that didn't seem like my emails were read. However, I did receive some emails that finally seemed like a real person but still were not that helpful and repeated the same thing that I had to send in a selfie photo. I think companies ought to allow the user to opt-in or opt-out in giving their biometric data. Or Robinhood ought to give other options to verify the user. If Robinhood was serious about verifying the user, how come they didn't accept the idea of me going in person to their office with my ID. That is the ultimate verification. So again, I think this is ploy for Robinhood to get user biometric data. I wonder how many other users are not feeling comfortable about Robinhood 's demand of sending their selfies. I wonder if a class action lawsuit could be initiated to prevent Robinhood from abusive tactics to force users to give up their biometric data.
