Consumer Narrative
About two weeks ago, I received a notification from a credit monitoring company that derogatory information about a collection activity was added to my credit report. Having an account with the credit reporting bureau, I was able to see the amount ( {$160.00} ) and the name of the collection agency. I did not recognize the debt and filed a dispute, then contacted the collection agency. I asked the collection agent about the debt and was told it was a balance left from enrollment fees for a university. I recognized the university as the one I enrolled in back in XXXX, which I only attended a couple of days and stopped going. Shortly after this, I went into the military for 22 years. Even though I never received notification or had any idea this debt was out there, it seemed possible that this debt was legitimate, so I paid the full amount with a credit card over the phone with the collection agent and was emailed a receipt. I did this without proof of the debt being the remaining balance from my enrollment fee from back in XXXX. The earliest date on the credit report is for the placed in collections date of XX/XX/XXXX. I have not had any dealings or anything to do with the university since XXXX, The first credit reporting bureau that I filed a dispute with quickly removed the collection from my report and returned the points back to my credit score. I found that a second credit reporting bureau was reporting the same derogatory information, so I called to speak with a representative to file a dispute. I explained what the collection agency said the debt was for and if correct, was a debt incurred 35 years ago and that I had no knowledge of until showing up on my credit report two weeks ago. I also explained that it was likely that the collection agency changed the original delinquency date and if not, then this was fraud. Yesterday, I received the results from the investigation with a determination of verified as accurate. How does a 35-year-old debt that I never knew about go on my current credit report for the next 7 years? This does not seem right, and I dont know what else to do.
