Consumer Narrative

In XX/XX/year> I purchased XXXX lights for {$59.00} from Home Depot and used my Home Depot credit card. The allure of getting a discount if I use my card lured me in. I had a {$0.00} balance on this card. With every creditor I have I always request a paper statement and turn on auto-pay. I used this card years back so figured autopay was still on and I'd receive a reminder letter. I've been working XXXX hours a week at work, have been sick, and it was XXXX so I did not have time to followup. Also we purchased additional lights that day and returned some of the lights so in the back of mind I assumed I was back to {$0.00} and didn't question it. On XX/XX/XXXX, I received a call from Citibank saying I had a past-due {$130.00} balance. I thought it was a phishing attempt so hung up and called right to Home Depot-Citibank. They told me I was already reported to the credit bureau for being over 30 days late for an original balance of {$59.00} which was now {$130.00}. I was devastated, confused and upset. Home Depot-Citibank told me somehow e-statements got turned on. In addition, the email they have on file for me is old and gets nothing but spam/phishing. I have had an account with Home Depot for many years and have never been late, not once. Neither have I been late with my other creditors. Now, I have seven years with this one {$59.00} charge ( paid off now ) on my report. Citibank was able to contact me easily AFTER they added on the late fees and interest on the late fees and reported to the credit bureau- but they made no attempt to find me as this would have been unusual for my credit history. I admit technically yes I was late, but because I was sick, and with only {$59.00} I ask that they give me grace and remove this one late payment from my credit report as I thought my auto-pay was on and I would have received a paper statement.
