I received a check from an attorney in XXXX for {$5000.00} on XX/XX/XXXX. I went to the First Citizens Bank at XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, SC XXXX to deposit the check into my checking account. I used my debit card at the ATM in the drive through lane. I entered the information to deposit the check and inserted the check into the ATM and was waiting for the receipt. A message on the ATM said transaction cancelled, the screen went blank and my check was not returned. I logged in again and checked the balance ... and then went into the bank and spoke to a teller who told me to call the fraud line. I spoke to the bank manager told him what happened and asked him to expedite the matter. After numerous phone calls to the fraud line the {$5000.00} was deposited into my checking account on XX/XX/XXXX. Friday, XX/XX/XXXX I received a letter from First Citizens Bank stating that they were unable to verify my claim and would be reversing the {$5000.00} on XX/XX/XXXX. I called the Customer Service number and was told that they denied the claim and that XXXX had confirmed that there was no check found! No check was found! How could that possibly be? No check at all. So, where am I now... I will have a large negative balance in my checking account and my Pension and Social Security benefits will be consumed by this negative balance. I obviously trusted First Citizens Bank to handle this matter appropriately and yet no check was found. How could that possibly be? Is there something wrong with the ATM machine or human error? My only income is the pension and Social Security and this could drag on for months!!!
