Consumer Narrative
In 2016 I purchased a new vehicle using GM Auto Finance while living in Washington state. After that I moved states 2 times ; and in both cases I registered the vehicle in the new state, and updated my address on their website. Fast-forward to the end of my loan, I waited for my title. GM lead me to believe that they had sent it to my current state. So I went to the appropriate office to get it ( Secretary of States Office here ). Talking with someone there I discovered there was some issue. And after back and forth and nearly 3 years I have finally found the issue. GM sent my title to Washington state and not my current state. When I asked them why they never updated my address appropriately for my title, they blamed me for not explicitly telling them I moved in a specific manner they never really explained. But as noted above I updated my mailing/billing address on my account via their website and registered the vehicle in my new states of residence. The latter of which they informed me would have required a request for the title, which the states must have gotten as the vehicle was registered without issue. Which would indicate that the states had contacted them and gotten the required information, why GM didn't note that or update appropriately is beyond me. When pressed on why nobody had explicitly informed me that I need to take special steps to get the title directed properly they insinuated that I should have known that, even though I had absolutely no way of knowing that ( since they didn't tell me, they also told me they do things differently than other lenders, which if that is the case then they need to inform their customers ). When I asked about this, and why they didn't inform their customers of this, they told me they had no way of knowing who was going to move. Which is true before hand, but if customers did what I had done, there was plenty if indication to GM to know that I had moved and that they could have told me if there was any special steps I needed to take. Putting aside that it shouldn't be my responsibility for them to properly administrate their loans. So now I have to coordinate with a state office in a state I don't live in ( on the other side of the country ) to try to get something that they should have just sent to me directly. At this time I don't know if I will have to pay out of pocket for anything, nor how long this could all take.
