Consumer Narrative
The 'do no harm ' decision to place SAVE borrowers in a mandatory forbearance they can not leave DOES harm a large section of public servants, especially those of us who should have been granted PSLF forgiveness in this time period. The buyback program is supposed to be our way out, but it is not being serviced or processed. I have worked in public service for XXXX months, XXXX more than is required for PSLF, but because of the inaction of the Department of Education, I have no recourse or avenue to forgiveness. Every month they refuse to process my buyback request is another month I do not have the option to leave the public sector for a job that pays market rate. This is a form of harm. I am stuck at XXXX qualifying payments, though there are XXXX qualifying employment periods, or a total of XXXX eligible for buyback once the XXXX for XXXX is processed. I was placed into the SAVE forbearance in XX/XX/year>, which does not count toward PSLF. I immediately attempted to switch to another IDR plan so I could keep making payments, submitting forms in XXXX and XXXX. I was just informed, after waiting XXXX months, that one has been rejected, and the other has not been processed. After not hearing back, I submitted a buyback request via the reconsideration process on XX/XX/year>. Notably, there is no way to track the status of this process, and I was just given a case number. This request has not been processed, though official letters have listed the expected time frame to be " up to 45 days. '' So, to sum up, I was moved from the REPAYE program to SAVE without requesting it. Then my loans were placed in a forbearance I CAN NOT LEAVE. I can not make payments. I can not switch to another payment plan. I can not get buyback to make payments. There is no indication of when this SAVE forbearance will lift. I earned PSLF forgiveness months ago, but the Department of Education, through their mismanagement and lack of action, is making what was promised to me before I entered public service impossible to attain. Had I instead worked outside of public service, I would have been able to repay my loans many years ago because I would have been paid at market rate. Fulfill your promise.
