Consumer Narrative
I have XXXX promotions with deferred interests expiring on XXXX XX/XX/XXXX and a Balance Transfer Check with no interest until XX/XX/XXXX. I noticed that my minimum payment was applied more to the promotion expiring in XX/XX/XXXX than to any of the promotions expiring within 30 days. When I called to reallocate the payment towards the promotions expiring within 30 instead of the one expiring in XX/XX/XXXX, I was told they couldn't reallocate the payment because it was locked. Upon review of my statements, it doesn't appear my payments have been applied even to the notice within my statements, which reads impart on page 2 of my statement : " Paying Interest .... In billing cycles in which payments are allocated to deferred interest balances first, the deferred interest balance will be reduced before any other balance on the account ... .. '' I've been told over and over by many account specialists that payments must be applied to expiring promotions within 30-60 days first to avoid unnecessary interest. I'm being told that, but it doesn't actually seem to be happening automatically, unless I call. This is the first time I was ever told I couldn't have a payment reallocated to expiring promotions because they were locked. I spoke with XXXX, an Account Manger today, after two other reps, and she said my Balance Transfer check promotion has a minimum payment due, however I don't see that anywhere on my statements. In reviewing my statements though, I do see that my payments have been allocated willy-nilly and in a manner to which more interest than necessary can be calculated, which is what payment allocation guidelines were supposed to prevent. The Balance transfer checks applied a service fee upon use, and no interest until the promotion expiration date, so why would they say a minimum payment is due for that promotion, but it doesn't show that on my statements? My other promotions with a deferred and accruing interest show minimums due. I'm attaching my Credit Card Statements. Notice how Home Depot another Citi Retail Services card handles interest awareness and promotions. They indicate exactly how much to pay to avoid interest charges especially including promotional purchases.
