I owe American express money for a credit card I used and was unable to continue paying in XXXX when I was left without work for about a year. I tried on several occasions to make a payment plan and American Express refused it each time and would not accept any installment I tried to make. I was not even asking for a lowered settlement amount. I asked for a lower monthly installment for XXXX months while I got back on my feet and then we can establish a different payment plane that suited both parties better. American Express refused. on XX/XX/year> ( I have a copy of the letter date and time stamped ) I wrote American express and asked them to please accept $ XXXX month to start paying off my credit card debit and this time they did not even respond. Now I find out through 3rd party attorneys that are contacting me to let me know that American express filed a lawsuit against me without warning and without trying to arrange a payment plan that I could afford
