Consumer Narrative

I attempted to purchase grocery using my Discover Card, and a message on the machine called out 'card unauthorized ', please try using another form of payment. Yes, very embarrassing, especially since that was the only card I brought with me to the store. Before I proactively reached out to Discover Card, I received a letter from them by standard U.S. Postal on XX/XX/XXXX, it was dated, XX/XX/2024, and stated that they have made a business decision to close my account because it is not being used as intended. Interestingly, I receive many advertisements from Discover soliciting other services or products they offer, but have never received a phone call, voice mail, text, email or any other communication regarding any concerns with concerns around how my card is being used. There was no phone # on this letter, so I called their customer service line at XXXX. I was transferred to their Customer Protection Department (? ), the representative said, yes, we've made a business decision to close the account, and could offer nothing else, but perhaps I want to re-apply. I asked for a supervisor, she said there's no one else to speak to but her, there is no supervisor for me to speak with, and again, if I have any questions write to the address on the letter. Why would I reapply for a card that I've already earned the privilege of having, additionally, now that I've lost my job, what legitimate credit card issuer is going to approve me for credit, etc.? She continue to repeat her response, so I thanked her for the time... This impromtu closure impacts my credit report and ratings, and presents hardship. Over the years Discover Card has sent me an abundance of junk mail soliciting their many other services and products, but on no occasion initiated a single notice or warning of any kind, through any form of communication regarding a business decision that " they are 'considering " closing my credit card account, and here 's what's needed to prevent that from occurring ''. Clearly, this would have allowed me to adhere to some unknown expectation/s that they felt I did not meet/am not meeting. This type of business extended by Discover Card was unexpected, disappointing, and will cause hardship. It should not have occurred. I need other consumers to know of my experience with Discover Card.. Since I've had this card, almost 3 years, I've had only 2 late payments. I'm pondering on if the majority of Discover Card customers impacted with these type of inappropriate and unforeseen business decisions made by the company impact predominately minorities or others from marginalized groups struggling to survive and provide, many of whom have still somehow managed to maintain a decent credit score.
