Consumer Narrative
Twice in several weeks I have received letters describing a breach of my personal information one from XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX and another From XXXX. Both companies provided credit monitoring through Experian Credit Reporting Bureau. When I signed up for credit monitoring I was appalled at what Experian made me agree to to get the monitoring. The Experian Privacy Policy and Terms of Service force one to accept an arbitration policy with no choice for opting out. If one does not click " Accept '' during the application one can not get credit monitoring from Experian. It gets worse. Experian Privacy policy states that they will inform me ( a sales pitch ) of their and their business partners products, services and promotions. Further, Experian 's privacy policy states that they will share ( meaning sell ) my personal information from my credit report with company 's they have partnered with and even non-affiliated 3rd parties. Experian states that a consumer can go to their website, or call or mail them to opt out. Why should anyone who has had their personal information hacked by no fault of their own is forced to opt out of Experian sharing and selling their personal information. Experian 's Terms are 36 pages long. Those terms state that ones consent to text messages marketing is required to be able to get their credit monitoring services. That violates FCC rules on consent. This is unacceptable and grossly unfair. People who from no action of their own have their personal information stolen must agree to unacceptable terms to have their account monitored. Experian is clearly taking advantage of those that have no other alternative. A fair to consumers credit monitoring system needs to be imposed on Experian. Please make it so. Thank you.
