My complaint is about the company Chime and the underlying financial institution The XXXX XXXX XXXX. I was made aware that my information was part of the recent XXXX XXXX XXXX data leak and that some of my personally identifiable information ( PII ) was available on the web, including the dark web. I got an email on the morning of XX/XX/23 welcoming me to Chime and that I apparently now had a Chime checking account with a debit card being mailed out " in the next few days ''. I DID NOT APPLY FOR OR REQUEST A CHIME ACCOUNT - THIS ACCOUNT IS UNAUTHORIZED AND FRAUDULENT. I called Chime to report the account as unauthorized and close the account. I asked Chime for the address that was on file for this account and they would not tell me what address was on the account, even though the account was opened in my name with all of my information. I informed Chime I was very concerned with the lack of controls around their account opening process, as it was very easy for someone to take a few pieces of information about me ( they at least had my name, email, phone number, and SSN ) and open an account with NO attempt to validate my identity - there was no 2-factor authentication, they did not have a picture of my identification, etc. I asked Chime how they can help ensure there are no further accounts opened in my name and they said if I see any future accounts opened up I should keep calling back to close them, which is NOT an appropriate method of customer due diligence. Because of how easy it was for someone to open the first account, I think it's highly likely further unauthorized accounts will be opened in my name. This is particularly concerning because Chime appears to approve account holders for credit cards with a {$200.00} deposit in the checking account, so someone would easily have taken out credit in my name due to Chime 's weak control system for customer authentication.
