Consumer Narrative

On XX/XX/XXXX I called a debt collection agency from my cellphone ( XXXX ) XXXX because it showed up on my credit karma as a collection I owed in the amount of {$360.00}. The only information I had is that the debt was initiated in XXXX of XXXX for the amount of {$360.00} and it said that I needed to contact the agency at XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, telephone number ( XXXX ) XXXX. It did not give me the agencies name. The lady I spoke with would not tell me why I owed this money. She told me I needed a reference number or she wouldn't even be able to continue to speak with me. I looked through credit karma and couldn't find one so she told me she had to hang up. I explained that I was calling to pay the debt as long as I could find out what it was for and she told me that she couldn't give me any information without a reference number or without me confirming the address. I listed off all the addresses I have lived at in the last few years ( XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX etc. She told me that none of these addresses matched her records and refused to speak with me further. She told me I should've received a letter or a text message neither of which I did. But I suggested to her that she could send me a text now to the number they have on file since I've had the same phone number for years. She refused. Since that call my credit score has gone down 47 points and I am currently looking to rent a new apartment and now my credit is far below average. I feel unjustly penalized especially as I was attempting to pay her the money but she wouldn't speak with me. I've called collection agencies before and there's other ways of verifying who I am and I think it's unfair that she wouldn't even allow me to pay the money or give me any info on it and now my credit is being affected severely. Please help me resolve this issue either by learning what it's from so I can pay it or if it's not from an address I've lived at then help me dispute it. I am reporting this to you on the recommendation by my realtor who suggested I reach out to the cfpb for help. Thank you for reading this message and I look forward to hearing from you Sincerely, XXXX XXXX
