Consumer Narrative

We use Capital One for Checking and Savings and utilize their bill payer function to make payments. On XX/XX/2024 we used the bill payer to make a payment of {$350.00} to what we thought was a XXXX credit card account but was in fact a XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX account that has been closed for some time ( by accident ). When we realized the error we began contacting both banks to try and recoup the erroneous payment amount. Both banks claimed contacting the other was the proper method for resolving the issue. Our XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX account has been closed/paid in full for some time ( years ) and there was no payment due to them. Capital One claims they transferred the {$350.00} to XXXX and XXXX has the funds. XXXX claims their policy is to not accept payments for closed/paid in full accounts and that they refused the payment which should have returned it to Capital One/us. Somewhere between these two banks is a payment made in error for {$350.00} and neither is really helping us resolve the situation by having the {$350.00} returned to us. I have spent hours on the phone with each and am my wits end hence why I am seeking help from CFPB to see if they can prompt something from either bank. Capital One claims it was sent, XXXX claims they would reject it/not accept it for a closed account. We filed a dispute with Capital One and they say because the money was sent there is no dispute yet XXXX says they never received nor have the money. One or both of them are not interested in actually investigating and seem content on the money having been deducted from our account.
