Consumer Narrative
In early XXXX, I applied to open an account with Chime. After filling out my application and providing the requested information, I downloaded the app. After trying to log into the app and website, I reached out to Chime on XX/XX/XXXX, to let them know I was unable to log in. By this time, I had not received any welcome or other emails from Chime. The same day, I received a response from Chime stating that they were unable to independently verify my information, and my application failed. Ultimately, my " enrollment attempt was declined. '' I started receiving emails from Chime on XX/XX/XXXX, about my new account. For the rest of XXXX, I received various marketing and other emails. However, I didn't receive any snail mail from Chime ( letters, debit cards, etc. ) On at least one occasion, I emailed Chime to let them know that I did not have an account with them and requested to be removed from their marketing mailing list. I never received a response from Chime. I didn't receive any emails in XXXX or the majority of XXXX. On XX/XX/XXXX, I received another email from Chime concerning changes to their privacy notice. I again emailed Chime, letting them know that I did not have an account with them, and requested that I be removed from their mailing list. I received a response on the same day, informing me, " Chime has closed the account in question per your request to prevent further unauthorized activity. '' I responded by stating that I didn't make that request as I didn't have an account and shared a screenshot of the email I received in XX/XX/XXXX stating that my enrollment attempt was declined. I was sent the same email several times until I requested information indicating I reapplied after XX/XX/XXXX, had my application approved, and was given an account number. After this request, I received an email stating that if I wish to " receive additional information regarding this account and transaction records we request that you provide the following : Confirmation of the last 4 digits of your SSN AND Proof of your ID theft claim, which may be a police report or a completed FTC report ( available at https : //www.identitytheft.gov ). '' I have no reason to believe that anyone other than Chime used my ID to open an account without my knowledge or consent after my initial application failed. Failure of Chime to even provide my account number to the email address they have associated with my " account '' also raises my suspicions about what occurred and their business practices.
