Consumer Narrative
I received notice from XXXX that a new credit card had been opened in my name the 1st week of XXXX. I had not applied for any new credit cards. Upon reviewing my account, I learned that a 0 % interest retail loan that existed with the company called Fortiva with a remaining balance in the amount of {$1600.00} had been transferred to a Fortiva Credit Card with a purchase interest rate of 25.99 %. The transfer was made at the existing 0 % interest rate. The Total Credit Line of the Retail Loan was {$4000.00}. The Total Credit Line of the Credit card was reduced to {$2000.00}. Fortiva is issued by the XXXX XXXX XXXX. This transfer occurred because I had not OPTED OUT of this change of terms. The notification to OPT OUT was delivered by email and had a limited time frame within which I would have to OPT OUT. I never read this email. When I called the company I spoke with the consumer representative and her supervisor. Both reiterated that the fault was MINE due to my having not read the company generated email and OPTED OUT! Why am I complaining? Deceptive marketing tactics. The previous Retail Loan was setup with a monthly auto-deduct payment requiring no real time oversight on my part. Had I been required to OPT IN, I would have declined as I do not need or want another credit card. If I had a medical issue that prevented me from managing my emails this would have occurred. Likely there are consumers that this has happened to. The Fortiva representatives call this action an Upgrade. It is NOT! It has decreased my total credit line and dinged my credit score by creating a new credit card liability that I did not ask for and do not want.
