Consumer Narrative
I am opening this dispute because Transunion has reported the same debt more than once with only a change of name the first time reporting a XXXX XXXX credit card as closed/charged off in XXXX and then, XXXX years on XXXX XXXX XXXX posting an update on the same charged off account. My understanding is that it is against the law for the credit reporting agency to post and drop your score for the same debt more than once. If that were, in fact allowed, the same creditor could keep reporting, or updating the same debt every month for 7 years, never allowing a credit score to recover for that period of time, plus the additional XXXX to XXXX years that it takes a score to go up, even when paying every bill on time and keeping credit utilization below 30 %. Given that with a low credit score one can not rent an apartment, get an auto loan to buy a car to get to work, pay more for everything from car insurance to numerous other things that are connected to your credit score, this is incredibly harmful to consumers. I almost ended up homeless due to landlords refusing to even consider someone with a credit score below a certain number. Fortunately, I found someplace to live on a temporary basis but will soon run into the same problem. I am sure there are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people that have found themselves in this same situation. So, I have either had the same charge illegally put on my credit report a second time, causing it to drop by XXXX points, or this law that allows that to happen needs to be changed. I request that the recent update be removed and my score reverted to what it was before the update.
