Consumer Narrative

A fraudulent application for credit was submitted in my name without my knowledge or approval to a lender on XX/XX/2023. I received a letter in the mail from the lender informing me of the fraudulent application on XX/XX/2023. I immediately called the lender to report the application as fraud and placed a security freeze on my credit file with all three major CRAs. I also submitted an identity theft report with the FTC on XX/XX/2023. A month after calling the lender, the hard inquiry had still not been removed from my Equifax credit report, so I filed a dispute with Equifax on XX/XX/2023 ( Confirmation # : XXXX ) to have the hard inquiry removed from my credit file. Less than 26 hours later, I received a notice from Equifax informing me that INQUIRIES ARE A FACTUAL RECORD OF FILE ACCESS AND WILL REMAIN ON THE EQUIFAX CREDIT FILE TWO YEARS FROM THE REPORTED DATE OF THE INQUIRY. On XX/XX/2023 I submitted a new dispute ( Confirmation # : XXXX ) and received the same response. Equifaxs own website states : When a lender requests to review your credit reports after you've applied for credit, it results in a hard inquiry. Im not disputing the fact that my credit file was accessed on XXXX by the lender. However, as stated above, the inquiry occurred without my knowledge or approval. I did not submit an application for credit with this lender, a thief who committed fraud submitted the application. Based on Equifaxs own language about hard inquiries, this information reported in my credit file is inaccurate. I did not submit the application for credit, and therefore a hard inquiry should not be reflected in my credit file.
