Consumer Narrative
Between XXXX I was the victim of identity fraud ; the thief applied for 3 credit cards in my name. On XX/XX/XXXX, they applied for credits cards with XXXX XXXX XXXX ( XXXX ) and XXXX XXXX and another card on XX/XX/XXXX with XXXX XXXX. All the banks were called to report the fraud. XXXX halted the in-progress application and the other two banks cancelled the accounts and initiated investigations. The investigations all found that these were fraudulent accounts, reported this to the three credit agencies and sent me letters stating such. Additionally on XX/XX/XXXX, I froze my accounts at all three credit bureaus, initiated fraud alerts with all of them and filed a police report. In XXXX, I checked my credit record with the three agencies and they had removed the accounts from my credit record but neither XXXX, Equifax nor XXXX removed the hard inquiries for the fraudulent accounts. On XXXX I disputed the inquiries with each of the three agencies. XXXX removed the inquiries and XXXX did not ( I am also submitting a complaint for them ). On XXXX, Equifax sent a letter stating they would not remove the inquiries because they are factual. I called Equifax to find out why it would not be removed and how to dispute it. They instructed me to send them copies of the letters from the credit cards and a letter stating I am requesting removal of the inquiries so on XX/XX/XXXX I mailed them the documentation. In mid-XXXX I checked my credit record at Equifax and the hard inquiries were still on my record so I called them to discuss how to remove them. On XX/XX/XXXX, I instigated another dispute online with Equifax and on XX/XX/XXXX they closed the investigation stating again the inquiries are factual and would not be removed. On XX/XX/XXXX, I re-sent the credit card investigation findings letters, a letter demanding removal of the inquiries and this time a copy of the police report to Equifax. I am awaiting a response from them. I do not believe it should be this difficult to correct your credit record especially after the agencies are notified by the credit cards of the fraudulent activity. The mere reporting of the fraud by the credit card banks to the agencies should have resulted in the complete removal of all traces of the fraudulent activity. The fraudulent activity definitely should have been removed once I sent the investigation letters from the credit card banks. It is preposterous that Equifax has not removed this fraudulent activity at this point.
