On Friday, XX/XX/XXXX I received an email alerting me that I chose Milestone Mastercard and a card would be sent to me in 7-14 days. The issue is that I have never appliedfor a Milestone Mastercard. I first searched the company and tried to call them to alert them that I did not apply for the credit card, but upon calling the number I found through their website they prompted me to input my social security number. I did not input my SSN and tried to call the XXXX XXXX XXXX which is the issuing bank on XX/XX/XXXX in the afternoon. The XXXX XXXX XXXX transferred me toGenesis FS Card Services , Inc. While on the phone with them they told me that I could either provide my SSN or would have to wait for the card to arrive in the mail.I did not give them my SSN. On Friday, XX/XX/XXXX, I checked my credit reporting and didn't see any hard inquiries. I also locked the XXXX and XXXX credit bureaus and froze my credit with XXXX. None of these credit bureaus had any inquiries or accounts associated with Milestone Mastercard or Genesis. The card arrived in the mail early in the week of XX/XX/XXXX, but I was out of town. In the mail the correspondence looked very similar to other credit card paperwork I have received. I did NOT activate the card, nor did I go to the website to activate the card. On Friday XX/XX/XXXX I called the XXXX XXXX XXXX again and was transferred to Genesis FS Card Services , Inc. where I attempted to close the account and get it marked as Fraudulent. As far as I can tell, based on the conversation they marked the account as Fraudulent, but weren't able to tell me if there was a balance on the card because I refused to give them my full address or SSN even though I did give them the card number. They also at different times said that they can't give me information on the account because it was marked as fraudulent. They told me that I would not receive anything in the mail to say that this account was marked as fraud and closed unless I went through www.identitytheft.gov and put my information there so they could match it in their system. I told them that as soon as a credit account is closed that I should receivewritten notice and that I believe it was them that actually opened the account and not an individual not related to their business. I have checked with the credit bureaus daily to see if there were any hard inquiries or updates to the accounts under my name and there are not. My belief is that Milestone Mastercard and Genesis FS Card Services , Inc. send out credit cards like this without an application and then consumers activate the card not knowing that they didn't even apply. I believe this is a shady and perhaps illegal business practice. There is nothing else to indicate that my identity was stolen and someone tried to apply for this card.
