Consumer Narrative
This complaint is addressed to ZELLE and XXXX XXXX, a bank with financial interest/ownership in Zelle. I was scammed for {$600.00} online by an imposter impersonating a known person with a verified account ( former government employee ) on XXXX on XX/XX/2022. The verified account posted having a small number of XXXX for {$600.00} which would be going to charity. In Direct messages, the person directed me to make payment thru Zelle and provided an email address of his personal assistant linked to the Zelle account XXXX. I sent payment of {$600.00} at XXXX through my Zelle account which is by default in my XXXX XXXX checking account within the app/account features. The email given was verified by Zelle ( banking information was confirmed by Zelle ). Within minutes of sending payment, the verified XXXX account posted that his account had been hacked. I immediately called XXXX XXXX to report the fraud and request stop payment. The representative completed a report to investigate. They replied days later that they will not be refunding my money. I then attempted to contact Zelle, and could not directly report the fraud to them because my Zelle account is through my bank. I spent almost an hour trying to contact them, and eventually found a link to submit a complaint. Zelle 's response was to thank me for submitting to protect others, but NO REMEDY for my own fraud, reported within minutes. My Zelle payment was sent to someone other than the intended, and I have not received any remedy to my payment or the fraudulent account linked to it. Banks that include Zelle within the customer banking website/app have a duty to protect their account holders from fraudulent payments. Zelle is an unethical operation offering no protection to it's customers. For this reason, it is the payment option of choice for fraudsters and scammers. Zelle needs to be held accountable for transferring money to verified bank accounts as they already have the fraudster 's information and linked banking. XXXX XXXX and all other banks that partially own Zelle need accountability and consumers should have protection against fraud.
