Consumer Narrative

I have had my CapitalOne card for about 17 years and my husband has been an Authorized User for about 7 years. The Credit Limit on the card is {$21000.00} but on XX/XX/XXXX my husband used his card to make a purchase for {$26000.00}, bringing the total on the card to {$29000.00}. I am the XXXX XXXX and thereby responsible for paying any charges incurred on my card and my husband 's card. CapitalOne did not require me to approve the charge in advance and only notified me AFTER they approved the charge that far exceeded the limit on the card. The CapitalOne website states that Authorized Users are not allowed to " Change the credit line '' which I have come to believe is deceptive language. Over the course of the next month, I made several calls to CapitalOne asserting that they should not have allowed the charge to go through without my authorization because my husband does not have the authority to change the credit limit. They stated that being " over limit '' transactions were allowed on our cards, they did nothing wrong. My position is that a cardholder would assume small over limit charges would be allowed for unexpected situations but that no reasonable person would expect CapitalOne to allow a charge that put the card over limit by almost {$9000.00}. I have asked CapitalOne what the upper limit of my card is, if not {$21000.00}, and they replied that they can't answer that question. My only option to avoid incurring huge interest costs was to take money out of savings to pay the credit card balance. I believe the language in CapitalOne 's Access Levels document is deceptive, that their management of credit limits is disingenuous to increase their profits and that they do not sufficiently protect the XXXX XXXX who is responsible for payment.
