I signed for a student loan for my son XX/XX/2007. I made payments, principle and interest, from the onset of the loan. My son had taken over the payments and last year checked his account to see that his loans were paid I full. He had three student loans with Navient. After the first of the year, I began to get emails from Navient on an old email account that I no longer use. I ignored them because the loans had been paid in full. Then I received correspondence from them and phone calls. It was then that they indicated to me that one of his loans still had a balance over {$4000.00}. I was surprised that in 15 years, we had not paid it in full. The customer service representative I spoke with indicated that overpayments on the account went towards future payments. I did not request that overpayments be applied toward future payments. Whenever I have borrowed from a financial institution or credit card company and have made overpayments, I have always had the extra go toward the principle of the loan. I went to my Navient online account to try to see what happened. My account showed our payments from XX/XX/2007, but the spreadsheet did not include loan balances as payments were made. I made a request to Navient asking for a complete accounting spreadsheet for this loan. They have replied by letter indicating this is request would require extensive time and please narrow my request to a 24 month period. I think I am entitled to a full disclosure of payments made and how those payments were applied to the loan. If Navient did not apply overpayments toward the principle, then they have been charging us interest on monies that have already been paid. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
