I cosigned two student loans through Sallie Mae for my daughter XXXX XXXX. XXXX became seriously ill in 2021 and has been off work without pay due to her illness. She had major XXXX XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX and then a second XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX and spent over XXXX weeks at XXXX XXXX XXXX. She is scheduled for a third XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX where they will be removing a portion of the left side of her brain. She will need many months of recovery before we know if the XXXX was successful or not and if she will be able to go back to work. Sallie Mae informed us the only way they can do anything about the loans is if she is declared permanently XXXX but we wont know that for quite a while. At this time she is no longer able to work , drive, or even be by herself. She needs constant care 24 hours a day. They are now coming after me for the loan payments and I understand that I am responsible as the cosigner. However, when I co-signed those loans I was making quite a bit more money and unfortunately I was laid off of my job that I held for 13 years due to no fault of my own and I now make considerably less. I struggle to pay my bills and I have almost completely wiped out my XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX. When the loans went 60 days past due it reported to my credit and knocked my score down XXXX points. This was devastating to me at the age of XXXX! Sallie Mae informed me that once the loans default in the end of XXXX I can have my wages garnished or a lien put on my home. If they garnish my wages theres absolutely no way I can afford to pay my living expenses. The equity in my home is all the money that I have at my age and if they come after that I dont even know what the point of living is anymore. XXXX XXXX has been absolutely devastating to our whole family and now we are both being ruined financially for something that is totally out of our control. I would pay the loans if I had the money but I just dont have it and I dont know where to come up with it. I already know that I have to work until Im XXXX XXXX XXXX because I dont have any money for retirement.
