I recently disputed a credit card transaction with a merchant that had overcharged me for a rental car. I contacted the merchant to resolve the issue but at the same time, asked my bank to also investigate. It turns out that when you do this, your bank lets the credit bureaus know that you have a dispute with a merchant currently being looked at but in the process, don't communicate the balance or the payment history to them of your credit card account at that time. As a result, all 3 credit bureaus dropped my credit score by XXXX points! Surely, this is illegal? Why would a dispute with a merchant result in my credit score dropping at all? In one case, the credit bureau dropped my score by XXXX points! I don't believe this is fair. I've worked hard to get my score up and due to what is clearly a flawed process, I have been penalized through no fault of mine. The merchant agreed that they were wrong and the matter has been resolved. However, my credit score has been severely damaged.
