Consumer Narrative

I had a debt on my credit report from XXXX. After attempts to dispute it with them for many years, I gave up. XXXX then randomly sent me a 1099-C cancellation of debt - code G " Decision or policy to discontinue collection. Decision or a defined policy of the creditor to discontinue collection activity and cancel the debt. '' They sent this 1099-C form to an old employers address. Thankfully my employer had my info to send it to me or else i would not have gotten it. XXXX also sent it 10 months after they had cancelled the debt ( and they sent it past the XX/XX/31 deadline ). With that said, experian is still showing it as a collections account on my credit report. I submitted a dispute and provided the documents showing the debt has been cancelled at the creditors request, and i also showed them that the debt is also 7 years old, so it should have been removed just on the statute of limitations alone. They came back with dispute results and said that " XXXX verified the information as accurate, so no changes were made ''. This legally is supposed to be removed from my credit report. Im not sure why they insist on keeping something on my credit report that not only has the documentation to prove its cancelled/discharged, but if XXXX is truly verifying this as an accurate debt, that means theyre actively going against the 1099-C " Cancellation of Debt '' IRS form they sent me , and i will have to let the IRS know that I have reported this as income due to cancellation of debt, but that XXXX is not honoring it XXXX as i no longer have any responsibility for the amount owed.
