We received a {$50.00} PNC prepaid/gift card for taking part in a study. The documentation we received stated that there were no ATM withdrawal fees from PNC ATMs, so we went to one nearby and withdrew {$40.00} ( multiple of {$20.00} ). They charged us a {$2.00} fee anyway. You can't call them because they charge {$2.00} to talk to an actual human. You can't go to a teller because they charge {$5.00} for any sort of teller-related service with these cards. It seems pretty clear to me that the entire prepaid card business model is built on extractive hidden fees, fees for basic services ( like customer support and teller services ) or stealing money from people for failing to use the card within a specified period of time ( in the case of gift cards specifically ). It's insane to me that you all allow this business model to continue to exist. What is the CFPB even for?
