Consumer Narrative

I changed my legal name - first, middle, and last names- in XX/XX/XXXX. In XX/XX/XXXX, I found that none of the three credit reporting agencies had updated my name. Equifax and XXXX both had a credit report under my old name and XXXX had a report under my current name but no part of my credit history. See attached PDFs of how the three reports appears in early XXXX. I requested guidance from the law firm that had assisted me with getting the court order for the name change, and at their advice sent each credit reporting agency a letter, accompanied by a copy of the court order, requesting them to change my name. In XX/XX/XXXX, I checked on my credit reports again. I found that XXXX had updated my credit report to include my credit history, but the other two basically gave me error messages : see attached PNG screenshots. I printed, completed, and mailed the Annual Credit Report Request Form for Equifax, which you can see linked to on the screenshot. And I mailed XXXX at the address they listed to request my annual credit report. This was in XXXX, and I haven't received anything from them yet. I requested advice from the law firm again and they've suggested submitting disputes to Equifax and XXXX, and a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Equifax and XXXX 's dispute forms allow for disputing incorrect personal information, but nothing for someone with a problem like mine. As I understand it, the agencies can handle changes to last name only smoothly enough, but any first name changes are a struggle for them. I gather that my situation isn't unique but their dispute forms don't make it possible to call attention to their inability to update their own records. It's not clear what my next step should be in getting Equifax and XXXX to update their records, beyond this submitting a complaint here. I changed my legal name two years ago, and since then I have put quite a number of hours into updating the credit reporting agencies. Given the necessity of a credit score for certain things - like renting a place to live - it's unacceptable that the agencies can't reliably update their own records on their own, and that they make it so difficult to address this issue. Please let me know if any additional information would be helpful.
