Consumer Narrative
Consumers are entitled to a free credit report from the 3 Credit Reporting Agencies each year. Once a consumers identity has been verified, they should have no problems easily securing their report. However, with intent, TransUnion and XXXX make it exceptionally difficult to access your report. TransUnion gave me varying reasons at different attempts why they were unable to give me my report. I tried several times to get my reports from TransUnion and XXXX through annualcreditreport.com. The only report I was able to get was my XXXX. It is important to note that TransUnion and XXXX are closely aligned on their individual sites, and with XXXX XXXX. TransUnion initially said they were having technical difficulties. When I tried later, they gave me another error message. And I never got my report from XXXX even though they said they had already given it to me. Now, the only way I can get a report from TransUnion and XXXX is to take out a membership for a fee, and then pay an additional amount to get a report. I am arguing that TransUnion and XXXX intentionally make it difficult to get a free credit report to force consumers to buy a membership with them and then pay for a credit report that should be free. At annualcreditreport.com, accessibility and verification to all three credit reporting agencies should be consistent. Each CRA has a different ID verification process. The verification procedure should have identification rigors yet simple enough for consumers who have limitations can get their reports as long as their ID can be verified. CRAs should give consumers a choice of getting a report in PDF format that can be stored on the computer device of their choice. They should be able to direct the file/folder where they want the file downloaded.
