Through personal finance site XXXX, I had heard about the Triple Cash Rewards credit card product from Upgrade, and the fact that it offered 3 % cash back rewards on some very unique spending categories was very intriguing to me. On XX/XX/2021, I began the process of applying for the card directly through Upgrade 's website. After providing them with my name, address, Social Security number, bank account information, and income, I was rather surprised to be informed that I was required to enroll as a member of the XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX before my application could be processed. Although Upgrade states that they will cover the initial deposit of {$5.00} and the first-year 's membership fee for the credit union , the fact that joining the credit union was a requirement for the card was never disclosed anywhere on the website or during the application process itself ( until after the sensitive information was provided. ). This seems incredibly deceptive, and had I known that applying for this card would require me to sign up with an additional financial institution that I'd never heard of before ( and that would entail an ongoing cost of membership ), I never would have bothered signing up in the first place. After trying multiple times to unsuccessfully proceed with the card application process without joining the XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, I was eventually presented with an option on the website to indicate that I was no longer interested in the card and could permanently withdraw my application, which is what I did. I believe it's only right for consumers to be told of this secondary requirement very plainly and clearly before they begin the application process for the rewards credit card ; I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been miffed by this.
