I live in Washington XXXX DC. In 2018, while my son was attending XXXX XXXX, he asked me to cosign an apartment for him. I agreed to do so, and electronically signed an agreement with XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX in XXXX SC on or about XX/XX/2018. However, after researching rent rates in the area, my son decided not to take the apartment. While checking my credit last year, I noticed a debt for XXXX owed to Carter-Young Associates . Once I discovered the mark on my credit report, I reached out to the Apartments first. Apparently they have charged me 2 months rent even though neither of us have never set foot in their apartment. As far as I know, he never even put down a deposit. When I expressed my displeasure with this policy, they referred me to Carter Young and stopped taking my phone calls. It feels as though I am being taken advantage of. They have to know a college student wouldn't be able to afford these rates. It seems they are charging the same price as a 2 bedroom apartment for a room. My agreeing to cosign was contingent upon my son accepting the apartment. If he doesn't take it, how are either of us still responsible for rent? I could understand some type of cancellation fee, but 2 months rent is ridiculous.
