Consumer Narrative
I applied for a mortgage to refinance my current home loan. As part of the application, an appraiser came to put a market value on my home. During the appraiser 's visit, he wanted to take interior pictures. I asked him not to do so and he complied. The mortgage company contacted me later and said they would not process my mortgage application without interior pictures. I supplied them with interior pictures that I had taken myself, from which I had redacted anything that showed a personal element of my home, such as furniture, photographs, art, and books. I also redacted anything that showed security system elements. The mortgage application was 100 % complete, absent interior pictures taken by the appraiser himself. The mortgage company informed me that they could not process my application without the pictures, and that after internal review, they would not accept the ones I had provided. The rate lock expired and I can no longer take advantage of the lowered interest rate I would have achieved with this refinance. Additional facts that I feel are relevant to this complaint : *The mortgage company involved holds my current mortgage. It is a 15-year mortgage that I have had for 6 years without once missing or making a late payment. *The refinanced mortgage would have been for an amount that is approximately 10 % of the market value of the home, as confirmed by the appraiser in his report. *I provided financial statements to the company that clearly showed I have sufficient assets to pay off the current or refinanced mortgage completely at any time, as well as sufficient income to easily support monthly payments. Given the low risk to the mortgage company for this loan, I do not see the need for this egregious invasion of my privacy. I have already allowed the appraiser to enter and visually observe every space in my home. I can not fathom the need for him to also permanently record every aspect of my personal space. I was given no assurance that the digital photographs would be stored on secure devices, would be transmitted only by secure electronic means, would not be shared with unauthorized persons, and would be deleted from all systems at such time as they were no longer needed. I feel I am fully justified in not allowing these pictures to be taken. As stated, I met the mortgage company more than half way in offering to provide pictures I had securely produced myself. I am sure I am not the only U.S. consumer that was affected by this practice.
