Consumer Narrative
I was on vacation in California, in late XXXX this year. My wife needed a new swimsuit, so we went to Kohls. We had left our Kohls card in my wife 's purse at my Parents ' house, so I had the cashier look me up using my social security number and state ID. I was surprised to see someone else 's name and address pop up on the screen. It turned out that our account was under my wife 's name, and my social security number was being used by someone else. I immediately called Kohls on XX/XX/XXXX to file a dispute. I was told that a dispute was in place, and a letter would be sent to my address. As of XX/XX/XXXX that letter had not arrived, so I called Kohl 's back. It turned out that no dispute or fraud claim had been filed because my birthdate and the birthdate on the account were different, but the representative assured me that they were placing a fraud alert on the account, and even gave me a confirmation number. In the meantime, I set up an account with the FTC and started an identity theft recovery plan. I also put a freeze on all the credit bureaus ' reports. XX/XX/XXXX I received a letter from Kohl 's addressing a dispute of charges to that account. The letter had my correct address, but it still had the other person 's name in the address line. Again I called Kohls. It turned out that there had not been a fraud alert placed on the account again. The representative assured me that the account would be " taken care of. '' When I asked if it had been closed, the call disconnected. Meanwhile, my wife had also received a letter that someone had tried to use her social security number to apply for a Kohls credit card. We called and cancelled her account. As I was searching the web to see if other consumers had similar issues, I noticed that the FTC had sued Kohls in XXXX for not providing information to their customers who were involved in identity theft, and now they are required to do so in a " timely manner. '' It turns out that Kohls seems to have a data breach problem with very little incentive to do better. It's not worth the 30 % off.
