On XX/XX/2021, I attempted to freeze my credit via Experian. The US FTC XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX at https : XXXX ) indicated that this would be a free service. Summary : Experian appears to intentionally force consumers into buying their paid credit lock service. Specific problems : 1 ) Experian has a " Credit Lock '' service, which is paid ( see https : XXXX ). In small print, the Credit Lock site says that the service is separate from Experian 's credit lock ( Security Freeze ) request site. ( see https : //XXXX ). It seems to be a 'bait and switch ' 2 ) After completing the online request form on Experian 's Security Freeze site ( https : XXXX ), including my social security number, I was presented with an error message that said I was missing my SSN ( but I entered it, using the option to see the entry I was making ). I believe the error message was intentional 3 ) Experian requires a written request to a Texas XXXX XXXX address. While my request is all about preserving security, Experian offers no guarantee that this process is secure 4 ) Experian offers an automated phone tree ( IVR ) which requests identifying information ( SSN, 1st digits of street address, zip code ) and then presents an error message. There is no option to speak with anyone.
