Consumer Narrative
I received a notice in the mail from the DC Office of Tax and Revenue dated XX/XX/XXXX. I didn't receive that notice until mid-late XXXX through XXXX. The notice was of tax, penalty, and/or interest due ( attached to this complaint ). It said I owed {$5100.00} for unpaid taxes and assessed interest and penalty charges on my District of Columbia Individual Income account for the XXXX tax period. The amount owed was {$3000.00} in taxes, {$1300.00} in interest, and {$760.00} in penalties. I reached out to the customer service line at the office of tax and revenue as this was surely a mistake. I paid DC taxes in XXXX ( my filings are attached to this complaint and were compiled by a CPA ) and I don't know how I can accrue {$1300.00} in interest over XXXX XXXX for something I just found out about -- to reiterate, I was just notified of the penalty this year -- meaning it would appear as if they deliberately waited so it would gain extra interest, etc. After waiting for hours on hold with customer service, I was then redirected to a different number in the collections division. I waited another few hours there only to be told to email a woman named XXXX XXXX about my situation. I've attached our email correspondence as proof, but here 's the gist : XXXX was first emailed by me on XX/XX/XXXX explaining the situation ( that I did file taxes, I did live in DC, and I don't think it's fair to owe interest on something for XXXX years that I just found out about ). I even attached my XXXX filings as proof. I received a response from XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX -- two days later. It was one sentence with little punctuation : " Thank you for the information. When did you move to DC. '' I responded on XX/XX/XXXX less than 30 min. after XXXX 's email letting her know my exact move date as well as my lease for proof of that timeframe. I did not hear back from here. I subsequently followed up XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX but heard nothing back. Fast forward to today. I receive a notice from RSI Enterprises ( document attached ) telling me the DC office of tax and revenue has given them my case for collections. And while I've been waiting to hear back from XXXX and her office, my interest has jumped another $ XXXX to a whopping {$5700.00} owed. My issue here is 3 fold -- 1. ) I paid taxes for XXXX and my tax filings show that. 2. ) Even if I didn't pay taxes for XXXX, it is unfair for me to have to pay XXXX years of interest for a complaint I just heard about in XXXX of XXXX. 3. ) It is unacceptable that, even after I discovered this problem in XXXX, the DC office of revenue has ignored my correspondence and fined me additional interest. I'm sure you've heard it all, but I want to be very clear. I am a XXXX XXXX XXXX female just trying to start my life. I was one year out of college in XXXX. I'm feeling unfairly targeted as 1. ) I don't have a bunch of money, 2. ) I'm being cooperative and trying to figure this out, and 3. ) I fear they're doing this to me because they think I won't have the means or know-how to fight it. Can you please help?
