Consumer Narrative
On XX/XX/XXXX, I paid the full balance of {$110.00} on my credit card and closed the account, as we never use the account and were trying to pay off our minimal debt in preparation to buy a home. Nothing against Capital One, we were just getting our small amount of debt paid off and had no use for credit cards. We had no idea the account was never closed and not until we were looking to buy a home last month, did we discover there was a 60 day late on our credit report. I KNEW it had to be a mistake since we no longer have a Capital One credit card. To my surprise and shock, apparently the account was never closed and Capital One had applied an annual fee in XXXX to the account ( 7 MONTHS after we paid off and closed the account ) and started to report the account delinquent in XXXX and XXXX. Still having ZERO knowledge of this, Capital One apparently viewed the account as inactive and REVERSED the annual fee/charges and closed the account ( thank you ). However, the 60 day late remained on my credit. How can I have a negative payment history on a charge that doesnt exist? I truly believed this would be a simple and understandable correction to my credit report, as I clearly did not neglect to pay my credit card there had been ZERO usage or activity after my XX/XX/XXXX pay off and an UN-activated card that was apparently sent, and exceptional payment history proves that. But the representative said we needed to write this letter to dispute the 60 day late on my credit report. Please understand this is devastating to us, since we have always taken our finances and credit seriously as you can see from my credit report ( absolutely ZERO lates on ANY of my accounts ). We were good Capital One Customers and made timely payments, and tried to do the right thing and pay the balance in full, and close the account. Please help correct this error on my credit report. This is severely affecting my credit and jeopardizing our ability to get our home loan.
